Bridge To Terabithia

Bridge to Terabithia is a novel written for found children, approximately 3-5th graders. It is somewhat tragic near the end, but the rest of the book is a great read.

Jesse Aarons is the central character of the story. He meets Leslie Burke, who is the new girl in the neighborhood. They become friends, creating a fantasy land for their enjoyment. They both enter the land they call “Terabithia.” They create this fantasy land to play, pretend, and develop a plan for dealing with their school bully.

One day, Leslie enters the land by herself and dies, leaving Jesse with the struggle of coping with her death.  When Jesse returns from a field trip, he learns about Leslie’s accident and is overcome with grief.

Yes, it IS sad. But why should it be banned?

According to About.com, this book has been challenged or banned because of the disrespect the children show to adults, the confusion of combining fantasy with reality, and profanity.
